I have been trying out Maca powder lately. If you don’t know what it is, it’s a turnip-like root vegetable that grows high in the Peruvian mountains. It’s supposed to be an adaptogen that is high in minerals and helps balance hormones.
I’ve heard it can take a month or more of constant use to see results. After my first try of the stuff, I wasn’t sure I was going to make it! It smells a bit like dried peanut butter, but certainly doesn’t taste like it. I think the taste is a bit fishy, yet indescribable. I’m sure everyone would have a different opinion.
So I began experimenting with different ways to consume it. I have found my favorite! Maca seems to do well with a sweetener of some sort. I tried it with honey and bananas blended in with raw milk and cream. That was good, just a bit too sweet for me.
Now my favorite way to drink it is with the milk and cream, a dash of organic vanilla extract and a touch of organic maple syrup. That really seems to bring out the good qualities of the maca. When I whip that up for a few seconds in my Magic Bullet, it comes out to be a frothy, lovely, sweet concoction, not unlike malted milk!

Some people drink wine while cooking. I prefer a big frothy mug of maca!

*Update July 27, 2009
Since I am now casein-free, I can no longer drink raw milk with maca. I finally had to buy gelatin capsules and put the rest of my raw maca powder into pills. I tried it in applesauce and different foods, but I just can't handle the flavor of the maca without milk. Capsules seem to be the only way I can successfully get it down every day.
